Microsoft Mail / Outlook / Outlook Express
Outlook is Microsoft's email client, and comes with various versions of Windows. Because it is known for having compatibility and security problems, Koumbit strongly recommends using Thunderbird, an excellent quality free and open source option made by the same team as Firefox. |
Configuration
Before you configure Outlook to access an email account, the email account needs to be exist already. If it doesn't already exist here is what to do : To create the email in a Koumbit hosting account, log into the AlternC interface at bureau.koumbit.net. If you want to create an email account called something@example.com, click on 'example.com' in the left-hand menu, in the 'Mailboxes' section. Then click 'Add an email to example.com.' Unless you are simply creating a redirection towards another email address, check the box for 'Is it a POP account?'.
Now, here is how to configure Outlook for an (existing) email account hosted at Koumbit:
Open Outlook and launch the account creation wizard by clicking on Tools > Email Accounts > Add, then 'Email'
- Enter your name, as you would like it to appear when people receive emails from you, and click 'Next'
- Choose IMAP or POP
- Choose IMAP is you would like to leave your mail on the Koumbit servers (this way, you can access your email from different places and computers, either using Outlook, Thunderbird, or by connecting to webmail by openning a browser and going to Koumbit.org.
- Choose POP is you would like for your email to be stored only on your computer.
- For outgoing mail, enter smtp.koumbit.net, and select the option "requires authentification."
In the 'Internet E-mail Setting' window, some will need to click on 'More settings' to activate authentification of smtp. Use the same settings as the incoming mail server.
- User name and password:
Your user name is your complete email address (ex. johndoe@example.org - not just johndoe).
- Your password is the one that you configured in the AlternC interface, when you created the email account at bureau.koumbit.net.
- Click on 'Next,' then 'Finish.' Be careful though, you are not done yet! There are also an important step to take for the security of your messages.
- In the 'Tools' menu, click on 'Accounts.' This will show a list of accounts that has been configured. (In some old versions of Outlook, you will need to go into the 'Tools' menu, click on 'Options', then select the 'Mail setup' tab.) Select the email account you just configured, then click on the 'Properties' button
- Click on the 'Advanced' tab.
- Check the boxes for "This account/server requires and SSL secured connection" for both incoming and outgoing messages. Then click on 'ok' and 'apply' to save the settings. Your account should now work correctly.
- It should be noted that some internet service providers (the people you pay for your internet connection) will block port number 25 for outgoing emails (SMTP). If this is the case, go to the window where you just checked the boxes for SSL, and change the port from 25 to 587 for the outgoing mail.
- Instead of 587, you can also try using 465 (again, only for the SMTP port). Some people have mentioned that things have worked better for them using port 465.
